The 54th running of the DeCelle Memorial Lake Tahoe Relay will be taking place on Saturday June 9th, and we know it will be another exciting chapter of this historical race. And to top it all off, for 2018 we have a lot of new and exciting things in store for you!
Start/Finish still on the Lake but better!
For those that joined us last year, we moved our start/finish line to the beach. While we all loved the opportunity to dangle our sore feet in the water and relax, it was missing something. We wanted the race to embrace the community just as much as the lake. So, for this year’s race, we’re going to start/finish in the beating heart of South Lake Tahoe – the Lakeview Commons. It will still showcase the splendor of the lake, give access to the beach AND feel the pulse of our town. Talk about a great way to sum up the journey!
Evening out the Legs
With the start/finish line moving towards the center of South Lake Tahoe, this also evens out the length of the first and seventh legs so that nearly every stage is about the same distance. Specifically, it means:
1st leg – changing from 8.6 to 9.6 miles
7th leg – changing from 11 to 10 miles
Adding a Staggered Start
One of our major goals this year is to build camaraderie with our event. We want to give everyone a chance to hang out after their journey and mingle. To do this, for 2018 we’re adding an early start. If your team’s pace average is over a 10-minute mile then we’re recommending you start at 6 am, and if it’s less than that, you will start at 7 am.
New Beer Sponsor
As we talked about in our earlier post, we have a new beer sponsor – Sufferfest Beer Company. At the end of the race, be sure to grab a FREE cold one on us. And the best part, it’s good for you! Talk about a win-win.
We have a few more things in the works for the 2018 race, and as soon as we get confirmation, we’ll let you know. Until then, keep on training.
